With sickle cell, we typically only see the patients who are in crisis which means they are having a lot of pain. I am patient with them. I understand they are in pain, and it’s frustrating. I can empathize with that.

As a nurse who suffers from Lupus, I can relate to pain. I personally cannot tolerate narcotic pain medication, so I have to turn to other means to control pain. Distraction is by far the best way to get through it for me. I try to distract patients from their pain by joking around with them or talking with them about their life outside of the hospital.
